For the last three years, Microsoft has invited photo professionals to its campus in Redmond, Washington, for a Pro Photo Summit. Another summit was scheduled for this July. But after surveying participants and finding many of them were unwilling to spend money on travel, Microsoft called off the event.
"We just thought it would send the wrong message to do it in 2009 and have people not be able to attend," Josh Weisberg, director of the Microsoft Rich Media Group, told PDN today. Weisberg says Microsoft still plans to hold a Pro Photo Summit in 2010.
This week Microsoft brought down the second phase of a layoff program to eliminate 5,000 positions at the company. There were organizational changes to the Rich Media Group, which now answers to a different boss. But the pro photo programs remain in tact, Weisberg says, including the Icons of Imaging sponsorship program.
